We were invited to a wedding in Ireland and the word voucher came up in connection to a gift for the bride and groom. What does the word mean? Is it tghe same as a check in the US?

The term "gift certificate" is the term I believe to be used in the US.

In Ireland, "check" (the payment method) is spelled as "cheque", and you'd ask for the "bill" in a restaurant (rather than the Hollywood-esque "Check, please!")
