Re: Birth and Baptism Certificates

Seoirse at 10:36:43 on 28 Nov 2007

Birth Certificates are issued by General Register Office Ireland (see http://www.groireland.ie). There is no online ordering service.

Baptismal Certificates are issued by the parish priest where one was baptised.

For family trees, photocopies of birth certificates are what you need, giving parents names and place of birth. For passport applications, certified copies are required.

There are many good research agents with online ordering service available. See http://www.irishancestries.com for details

In Northern Ireland, birth, marriage & death certificates are issued by General Register Office Northern Ireland (GRONI)(see http://www.groni.gov.uk/index.htm). They have a very good online ordering service.

In the Republic of Ireland, birth, marriage & death certificates are issued by General Register Office Ireland (see http://www.groireland.ie). There is no online ordering service available.

You can obtain your all birth certs for Rep of Ireland citizens on website that so many others have given so far. http://www.birthsdeathsmarriages.ie with all certs posted to anywhere in the world within 3 days of your order being accepted. I would advise against giving personal information like dates of birth and names and places on this open site. It is not safe to do so. Those that do not want to go through the birth/death/marriage offices, have little chance for information.

Re: Birth and Baptism certs

Seoirse at 13:20:35 on 21 Jun 2008

The research room of the General Register Office Ireland has moved to larger premises in Lower Abbey Street, Dublin. The research room is where searches for birth, marriage and death certs can be made. When you find the right one, this office will also provide a photocopy of the entry in the index.

Unfortunately, if you require a certified copy of the same index entry (e.g. for passport application), you will then have to go to the GRO office in Lombard Street (about 20 minutes walk away).
