BYRNE Family

John LEARY at 08:32:09 on 14 May 2006

My name is John LEARY. I Live in New Zealand. I have just found out that an ancestor of mine, Charles BYRNE of Cullentragh was born around 1729 at Ballyrogan Co. Wicklow and died at Knockrath.
Where abouts are these places when looking at a map of Co. Wicklow?

You asked, on 14 May, where are Ballyrogan and Knockrath. I don't know where the former is, but Knockrath is between Laragh, (near Glendalough) and Rathdrum. Knockrath Post Office, (now closed) overlooked the Vale of Clara, about 4 miles from Laragh and 3 miles from Rathdrum. There were many Byrnes in Co Wicklow.

I am a Byrne descendant with roots back to Ballyrogan House, Wicklow. It is located near the town of Redcross (just outside it actually) which you can easily locate on current Irish maps. There house is still standing (I was there in 2000) and there is currently a Bed & Breakfast-type place there and art gallery. Go to your internet search engine and type in Ballyrogan + Wicklow + Ireland and it will pull it up for you. I happened upon your question as I was looking up my 4th great grand uncle Charles Byrne of Ballyrogan, born bet. 1760-1780 (which would be the generation after your Charles by the birth dates.) His brother James, is my 4th Great Granfather who eventually immigrated to America. Their parents were a Byrne and his wife was a Tarrell and they lived in Ballyrogan House until she died but I do not have a date yet. Your Charles might have been the brother to my 5th Great Grandfather since they would be of the same age range. It would appear that we are probably related at that point. Interesting to be sure! I would love to hear from you further and perhaps we could exchange information. Hope to hear from you soon.

I am looking to find the Wicklow Co. part of my Byrne relatives. The first to America that I have found was James Byrne b. Abt 1826 married Bridget Whyte. He was in America by 1855. I think he can over with a brother but it is such a common name I don't know for sure and researching it has been hard. The names came down every generation--so they are all Charles, John, James, and Thomas

I am Charles Byrne from Wirral, Merseyside. I know my family were originally from Wiklow but don't know much more. For generations they lived in Liverpool starting, I think, with my Grandfather, John Joseph (Jack) Byrne who died in 1981. Is that any help to anyone?
