Tour Code: 92345P1
Duration: 1 hour
This 1-hour Hurling Tour involves giving tourists a presentation informing them about the sport. We delve into the history of Hurling and how it has evolved into the fastest field game in the world, that we see today. This is all done in a Hurling team's dressing room in Kilkenny City, giving tourists that up-close, intense experience. Once tourists are up-to-date on the basics of the game, we take them on to the field to try a few basic skills for themselves. This is the part that has proved most popular, with guests eager to get immersed in the Irish culture.
You'll meet us at
O'Loughlin Gaels GAA Grounds in Kilkenny City 5 minutes before the tour is due to begin. We will give you a warm welcome and give you a hurl (stick) and sliotar (ball) to examine before we start the presentation. Grasping a hurl for the first time is something special and you will immediately feel a sense of intrigue. Before I begin to delve into the sport I ask you all if you have heard of the sport before, 95% have not.
I then begin the presentation, here you will get to understand the rules, scoring, history and action clips of Hurling. After the 15 minutes presentation the appetite is certainly whet. You will then be very keen to hit the field and try this sport you yourselves.
On the Hurling field, we will coach you some basics of the game, the ground-stroke, hand-pass, solo run and shooting amongst the main skills to be practised. We spend 35 minutes on the field and even give you an opportunity to take a strike at the goalpost (for the competitive guests). Worth noting that
we encourage the unathletic and challenge the athletic. There is no age barrier for this tour, we have previously had kids and guests in their 90's partaking in our tour.
We give you all an opportunity to take pictures/videos and use toilet facilities before the tour ends. We feel you cannot visit Kilkenny (the home of Hurling) without trying the sport!!
