Duration: 1-2 hours
Successful sheep farmers need well-trained sheep dogs, and this 90-minute tour will show you how Border Collies are trained to work on a farm. Set in the stunning Connemara countryside, this farm is surrounded by rolling green hills that are backed by the Maumturk Mountains, and just minutes away from Lough Nafooey which boasts a freshwater beach. Depending on the season, you might have the chance to shear some sheep or cuddle with newborn puppies, and this tour is a truly authentic experience of life in western Ireland. Transportation is not provided to the farm to attend this experience; the distance is about an hour away from Galway city.
Choose from multiple afternoon tour times to meet your sheep farmer, Joe, who will take you around his Connemara farm and teach you how to train sheep dogs. Joe is so knowledgeable at training sheep dogs, that he and his dog, Roy, helped film scenes for the movie, "Marley and Me," and he's happy to share those secrets with you out here in the rolling green hills.
You'll first receive an introduction to sheep farming and the history of sheep in these hills, and how Border Collies are perfect for herding the Connemara Blackface sheep. This is followed up by a practical demonstration of the Border Collies at work, as they skillfully herd the bouncing white sheep around the rugged terrain.
During summer months, visitors can experience a sheep shearing demonstration right here on the working farm, and maybe even have the chance to cuddle with newborn puppies. The visit concludes with a question and answer session, and then guests are welcome to wander the farm and explore the pastoral scenery. Aside from the sweeping view of the mountains, you can also make out the remains of an ancient Irish famine village, as well as historic potato ridges and freshwater Lough Nafooey.
Just 25 minutes from the Wild Atlantic Way, and 25 minutes from Cong, this tour is a truly authentic way to experience western Ireland.
