The James Mitchell Museum is housed in the Department of Geology, National University of Ireland, Galway. It opened in its present form in 1977. The museum serves as a display area, a teaching facility and a repository for research and teaching collection s of geological material. It houses over 12,500 rock and fossil specimens supported by a computerised catalogue. A large number of the specimens is displayed in a number of thematic areas in the main gallery which retains much of its 19th century characte r. Directions: Make your way from Eyre Square to Eglinton Street then over the Salmon Weir Bridge, passing the Cathedral to the Quadrangle. Ask for directions at the Porters Office in the Archway located at the entrance to the Quadrangle.
