The Irish at War at Home and Abroad, 1550-2001
"For in far foreign fields from Dunkirk to Belgrade, Lie the soldiers and chiefs of the Irish Brigade".Thomas Davis.
These lines evoke the fates of the Wild Geese, men who left Ireland to seek her freedom overseas. In fact there have been many Irish brigades, fighting around the world in different armies. At home we have experienced war and peace, suppression and independence, conflict and calm.
The National Museum of Ireland is opening a major new exhibition in October 2006 at Collins Barracks, using original artefacts, letters, and replicas and audio accounts to show how soldiering and war have affected the lives of Irish people.
There are three main themes, Irish soldiers at home, Irish soldiers aboard and Irish soldiers in the 20th century, which are explored through the eyes of the average Irish soldier, and from that of civilians caught up in war and conflict here in Ireland.
Our collection of military artefacts, and recent donations, including more unusual items such as the sword of one of Napoleons soldiers, playing cards taken from a pirate ship, Christmas cards and chocolate boxes from the trenches, a child's gas mask, uniforms, rifles and the flag of the Irish Republic will be on display to bring alive the military and social history of these Irish soldiers.
The new 3 story purpose built exhibition space house planes and armoured vehicles lent by the Irish Defence Force and Air Corps and are displayed with objects in our collection, to tell the tales of the men who flew, drove and serviced the vehicles in Ireland and on UN Peacekeeping duty.
18 August 2008: New Military Exhibition opening at the National Museum of Ireland
The National Museum of Ireland is pleased to announce the opening of a new exhibition entitled UN 50 within the Soldiers & Chiefs Exhibition at Collins Barracks
Ireland joined the United Nations in 1955 and since 1958 has been involved continuously in peacekeeping duties throughout the world. The UN 50 exhibition examines the role played by these Irish men and women in the cause of world peace over the last 50 years in particular looking at their service in Congo, Cyprus, Somalia the Sinai, Lebanon, Liberia and Chad. Over 800 peacekeepers have lost their lives in the service of the United Nations of whom 10% were Irish. The exhibition continues to December 2008 and contains interactives about Irish peacekeepers and equipment from their tours in Congo and Lebanon.
Bring along your family to explore the histories of the soldiers and their families in this exciting new exhibition!
