Leixlip, Co Kildare

This little town on the Sylvain banks of the River Liffey is built on an ancient Viking settlement established over 1000 years ago. The name Leixlip is derived from the old Norse for 'Salmon Leap' and indeed Leixlip remains a popular destination for fisher to this very day.

Leixlip Castle was built in the 13th century and from here King John set out to hunt with his nobles in the great oak forest of Kildare.

To the south west of Leixlip a large conical building with a spiral staircase winding it's way up the outside rises up over the landscape. 'The Wonderful Barn' was commissioned by Lady Connolly of Castletown House to provide relief labour for the starved populace of the area during the famine.
