Aghaboe, Co LaoisThe Irish name translates as ' The Land of the Cow'. An ancient abbey, built by monks in the 6th century is visible from the roadside. The first church on the site was built by St. Canice and become an important centre, St. Virgil is said to have left here to become Bishop of Salzburg, Austria. Much of the ruins visible date back to the 14th century and are of a Dominican Abbey.
