Clonnagh, Co LaoisFounded in the 7th century by St. Fintan, the monastery which stood on the site of this town was one the greatest monasteries in Ireland. A famous seat of learning, at one time the monastery had 4000 foreign students. The monastery lasted until the 16th century and is famous for producing the 'Book of Clonenagh', a record of literature and laws which was last seen in the 17th century.
