Mountrath, Co LaoisMounthrath in times gone by was a prominent industrial town with a thriving ironworks, cotton mill and tannery, today it is a small market town. The iron industry, established in the early 17th century flourished for a century and a half. It resulted in the destruction of the surrounding forests for timber. The town is now mainly agricultural and an excellent base for exploring the Slieve Bloom mountains. It has picnic facilities near St Fintan's Catholic church. The church is an elaborate example of Gothic Revival architecture. The River Mountrath is also good for fishing.
