Portlaoise, Co Laois

A prosperous commercial point, principal town and administrative centre of the county, situated on the intersection of a number of national roads and on the main railway between Dublin / Cork and Limerick. Until independence in 1922 it was known as Maryborough. The present town was laid out in the eighteenth century and the main buildings date from then on.
