Timahoe, Co LaoisThe towns name means ' the house of Mochua'. Inhabited by a colony of rooks, the 96ft tall round tower of Timahoe is one of the best preserved round towers in the country. There are about seventy round tower remain around Ireland, it is believed that they were once used to call monks to prayer and as place of hiding when monasteries were being attacked.. There entrance to the towers are generally about 16ft above the ground and were reached by means of a ladder. The monastery at Timahoe was founded in the 7th century by St Mochua the patron saint of Laois.
