Bettystown, Co Meath

A famous seaside resort with a fine, sandy stretch of beach from Laytown to the mouth of the Boyne at Mornington. The eight century Tara Brooch, one of the best examples of the goldsmiths art in early Christian Ireland was discovered on the beach at Bettystown in 1850.

Every year in June, July or August, Bettystown's two mile stretch of glorious sandy beach is transformed echoes with the drum of horse hooves. Nowhere else in Europe is an official race meeting held on a beach except here in Bettystown. Behind the strand, to the north is the rolling sand dune golf course known as 'The Burrows'.
