Nenagh has its origins in the settlement of the de Butlers of Ormond, whose castle, by in large still intact, overlooks the town centre. By the mid nineteenth century, Nenagh had become a typical garrison town, with a strong market place present. Following the 1847 division of Co. Tipperary into two administrative regions, the two became the capital of the North Riding division. Today the town evolves around many prosperous industries, which have arrived from all parts of the world. There is a feast of features to relish, from the ninety year old fountains painted in the county colours and the high proportion of shopfronts in the traditional mould, to thee major attractions of its two nineteenth century churches of Gothic design, and the ruins of a Franciscan.
