Portlaoise is a prosperous commercial point, and is the principal town and administrative centre of the county, situated on the intersection of a number of national roads and on the main railway between Dublin / Cork and Limerick. Until independence in 1922 it was known as Maryborough. The present town was laid out in the eighteenth century and the main buildings date from then on.
Every June the town holds a jazz festival.
