Patrick Kavanagh, one of Ireland's most highly regarded poets, was born at Inniskeen and is buried in the village cemetary. The MacMahon clan of the 17th century are buried in a vault in the village and a cross bearing their arms can be seen on a wall near the graveyard. The Patrick Kavanagh Literary Resource Centre in the sensitive restored Church is worth a visit.
