18 is the Legal age to be sold alcohol in Ireland. In pubs there is a new law that says that pub owners are not allowed an over-21’s or over-23’s policy, so mention it if refused entry.

Always bring ID with you! Driver’s licences are usually accepted, and passports are always accepted.

Nightclubs, as far as I know, are usually 18 or 21 but not under 18.

Typically under 18s are allowed in pubs until 6.30pm. After that it’s at the discretion of the owner. Legally though as far as I know under 18s are not allowed in after 6.30pm.

The lagal age for purchase and consumption of alcohol in Ireland is 18. This is pretty strictly enforced, with (for Iriah people) a garda (irish police) ID, passport and full drivers licence accepted. For international IDs, I’d imagine a passport or drivers licence from anywhere in Europe/North America would be accpeted (though they’re not legally obliged to recognise theese). Generally people under 18 will only get into pubs or get served in off-licences if they’re particularly older looking with some sort of fake ID, and they’re usually good at spotting these… also helps if your an attractive girl! Guys aren’t getting in underage! Nightclubs are much trickier and even refuse 18 year olds for a huge amount of reasons. Nightclubs/pubs with dance floors can be over 21 or over 23 if they wish to be and properly display a sign on the outside of the premesis saying as much! If they don’t display that, then your being discriminated against on the basis of age… although good luck arguing this with your typical Dublin bouncer!

If you look young (or “border-line”) you’ll probably be asked for ID, especially in City Centre pubs/ clubs. It’s always possible you might not be asked, but be prepared. Don’t expect Ireland to be less lenient than where you’ve just come from!

Two friends and I are thinking of making Dublin our senior trip after we graduate. We will all be two or three months from being 18. What can we do, since we wouldn’t be allowed in the pubs after 6:30?

Hey. im thinking about going to dublin for my 21st, some of my friends will still be 20 and i’m not 100% sure on the legal age for drinking is. some of my friends have been in the past, but it was wen they were quite young, and say that you need to be 21 to drink. and online it says that the legal age is 18, 21 or 23. would really appreciate it if some one could clear this up for me. thanks. Jay.
